We flew to Istanbul on a chartered spacious Thomas Cook A330 from Gatwick. The flight was good and the transfer to M/V Discovery was smoothly handled, though there was horrendous traffic. Discovery is a smallish ship with nice public rooms. However our cabin was badly in need of refurbishment ~ but it was very quiet. The cruise was for eleven nights around the Black Sea calling at Trabazon (Turkey), Sochi (Russia), Yalta, Sevastopol, Odessa (all Ukraine), Constanza (Romania), Nesebur (Bulgaria) before returning to Istanbul for an overnight stay.

We took one of the offered excursions in each port and as always the quality was effected by the standard of the guides. Those in Ukraine were excellent whilst those in Russia, Bulgaria and Turkey were much less so. Our excursion in Constanza was spoilt by the lack of time devoted to it, leading us to return to the Ship at 18.20 for an 18.30 formal dinner, missing the Captain's Farewell Party at 17.45. The excursions were also extremely expensive particularly when measure against say P&O.

We did however enjoy the cruise despite the disappointing weather in Sevastopol. The ship provides an excellent base, with unfussy disembarkation procedures. The lectures were good and well attended and the food excellent. We would also commend the crew who were mostly delightful.

Unfortunately our return flight from Istanbul to Gatick was with Monarch Airways in a cramped 757 with narrow and reduced pitch seats which were very uncomfortable ~ however this would not deter us from returning to the Discovery for another interesting cruise.

We have just returned from the Discovery cruise Black Sea 2, which followed this one with an identical itinerary. Our day of bad weather was in Sochi (Russia) - torrential rain to the extent that it was spectacular. We too were squashed into a Monarch 757 (both ways) and would think twice before flying any greater distance in such conditions. The staff were to a man wonderful - smiling all the time with passengers and themselves. A critic could say that they sometimes lacked a deferential manner that others may seek - we found it very appropriate. Discovery organistation is first class - having cruised many times this was the first on which we didn't have a problem finding a table in the self service restaurant or have to queue for anything, ever. But we did opt out of the cocktail parties which probably had a line for photos. Great speakers, fellow passengers, crew and ship. who wants anything more?
