MV discovery - our first cruise leaving at the beginning of July was cancelled due to engine failure, so we opted for a cruise which had six stops and fourteen days in total including the eclipse. However, on our way down the day before we were told two more stops had been removed. This was to enable the boat, only running on three engines to sail up for the eclipse. However, we were told that in order to save fuel it was only on two engines for some of the time. Some of the passengers had originally booked when there were eight stops and there was a lot of disgruntlement on ship regarding this. Sadly those who had gone for the eclipse were disappointed because it was cloudy.
Our stops (all four of them) were reduced in time at port, Alta on a Sunday was a nightmare as you were dropped in the town centre which was in the middle of nowhere and the only way you could get anywhere was by taxi, one cabin's passengers were left in Alta as they didn't get back in time. Informative lectures, bridge if you played it, deck games limited and pools should have been described as dipping not swimming!
Food was absolutely excellent and service equalled that. My husband had a nut allergy and they provided us with menus the day before to ensure no cross contamination of food.
The boat is an old lady, a toilet exploded, something to do with a new pump, there were several leaks on deck four and five. However, overall met some wonderful people and will cruise again, just not with Discovery. We felt that being offered £200 each for the two stops cancelled whilst on our way down was not compensation enough and although I wrote a consise letter afterwards it was to no avail. There was no real incentive to sail with them again.
Entertainment was fine, bar prices reasonable and room service excellent.
Children could be counted on one hand and this had to be a bonus!

I can understand your frustration. Please see my cruise review dated 12th June this year on our Iceland cruise with this company. I am glad it will not put you off cruising as you can meet like you say, some really nice people. Like you I wrote concise letters to the company and in the end did receive further monies back. I shall not cruise with Voyages of Discovery again even though the Filipino crew were fantastic. Enjoy your next cruise whenever and wherever it may be.
