To "celebrate" our 50th birthdays, we travelled to Antarctica with Voyages of Discovery. This was our third cruise on mv Discovery, so we knew what to expect - but we were pleasantly suprised by the low number of passengers (demanded by the authorities for cruises that land in Antarctica), which meant that there was plenty of room around the ship and prompt service at all times. Discovery is not a super-luxury ship, but for the price it offers extremely good value. We chose a Junior Suite, which gives a large sitting area and a bath (but water restrictions on this long cruise from port meant we only used the shower). Discovery are very experienced with Antarctic cruises, and have a very high quality team of lecturers/guides and zodiac drivers - many from New Zealand (very pleasant people). Pre- and post-cruise stays in Buenos Aires offered a 5 star hotel (and excellent steak, which I enjoyed for my birthday meal). We cruised from Beunos Aires, via the Falklands and South Georgia to the Antacrtic peninsula, and ended in Ushuaia. The highlight was South Georgia, which was well worth the 2 days cruising each way to get there. This is not a trip for people who demand high levels of entertainment, or a different port each day, but it is the most memorable cruise we have done.
